Scenario sourcing: creating transparency around climate impact and material selection

Give Steel helps developers, consultants and contractors compare the climate impact of raw materials and identify solutions with a lower CO2 footprint.

Comparing the CO2 dootprint of raw materials

The choice of raw materials is an important factor in reducing the climate impact of steel structures.

At Give Steel, we use scenario sourcing as a tool for comparing different material options within a project’s technical and financial framework. It provides a clear overview of the relationship between cost and climate impact, making it possible to assess different solutions on a documented basis.

Our CO₂ calculations are carried out by experienced specialists with expertise in climate and environmental assessments, including LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) methodologies.

Close collaboration

Early involvement creates better opportunities to assess different material choices and structural solutions throughout a project.

Through close dialogue and collaboration with developers, consultants and contractors, we contribute knowledge on materials, structural principles and opportunities to reduce the climate impact of the steel structure. This includes the selection of low-carbon steel and design optimisation based on the project’s specific requirements.

Accurate CO2 calculations

All Give Steel steel structures are covered by EPD documentation for use in projects requiring environmental documentation and certification.

Where a more accurate understanding of the climate impact of a specific steel structure is required, we can calculate the structure’s CO₂ footprint using third-party verified EPD data from the steel mills supplying the raw materials, combined with Give Steel’s own EPD data covering production, transport and installation.

We support documentation requirements for a wide range of certification schemes, including DGNB, BREEAM, LEED, The Voluntary Sustainability Class, Miljöbyggnad and others.

“We take a project-specific approach, where scenario sourcing and early involvement make it possible to compare different material options and understand their impact on the climate footprint of the steel structure. In selected projects, we have seen reductions of up to 40% when material selection is integrated into the decision-making process at an early stage,” says Ole Lyng Hansen, Purchasing Manager.
