Pharma customers are choosing low-carbon steel

The pharmaceutical industry is currently one of the largest developers. Give Steel delivers project-specific steel structures with a low CO2 footprint for the expansion of production facilities in the pharma sector.

Give Steel has supplied several thousand tonnes of structural steel to projects across the pharmaceutical industry in recent years. These projects place particularly high demands on CO2 footprint, quality, efficiency and safety.

The pharmaceutical industry has taken the lead in choosing low-carbon steel, which has significantly reduced CO2 emissions when compared with conventional steel. On one such project, an ambitious customer saved approximately 30% of emissions by choosing low-carbon over conventional steel. This corresponds to a saving of just over 2.7 million kg of CO2 emissions.

During this process, scenario analyses were carried out to provide an accurate picture of the potential CO2 savings by choosing raw materials with lower CO2 emissions. Give Steel’s purchasing department, the steel wholesaler and the client all worked in close collaboration to ensure the lowest possible CO2 figures in relation to the customer’s desired delivery times. The project’s low-carbon steel beams have a climate footprint of 333 kg CO2 per ton and are manufactured in Europe from European steel scrap.

Of the more than 8,000 tonnes of steel delivered and installed for this project, the majority is structural steel. In addition, we supplied secondary steel for features such as stair towers, technical rooms, and rooftop structures.

Complete documentation for EU taxonomy and certifications

Give Steel provided the necessary documentation to ensure that the project is compliant with EU taxonomy, as well as the required data for sustainability certification. The design primarily consists of a simple steel structure with columns and beams.

All steel is painted with fire-resistant paint at our factory in Brande using a paint that can withstand 120 minutes of fire. Part of the structural steel will be visible when the project is completed, so it is important that the surface is nice and smooth. This is not only about aesthetics, but also about cleaning considerations in buildings, where hygiene is of the highest priority because of the nature of products the customer works with.

Investment in new technology streamlines production

Give Steel are specialists in the design, dimensioning, production and installation of steel structures for the pharmaceutical industry Because our project managers have accumulated extensive experience in this type of project, they are able to come up with the optimal solutions that are required to satisfy these technically and environmentally exacting requirements. Our engineers are well-accustomed to accommodating the particularly exacting quality requirements of laboratories, packaging plants or production facilities.

The projects are constructed as BIM models and design optimised to avoid overdimensioning. Efficiency and precision are alpha and omega for the pharmaceutical industry. In 2024, Give Steel invested in a new state-of-the-art machining centre for steel elements in order to accommodate project owners’ exacting demands and requirements. This allows production to not only perform their work faster, but with greater precision than would be possible with manual machining.
