Steel structure for a DGNB Gold standard

One of Give Steel’s recent projects requiring DGNB Gold Standard certification was for our customer Frode Laursen. This involved a large-scale logistics hub of 31,000 m² in Vejle, Denmark, divided into two separate construction stages.

Give Steel produced, supplied, and installed a total of 1,310 tonnes of steel for this ambitious project, which aims to achieve DGNB Gold certification. The steel structure plans included detailed wind calculations provided by an external consultant. These calculations allowed us to optimise the design and avoid over-dimensioning. Across both construction stages, there were 224 trusses. These trusses were designed and built with tension on one side, working in conjunction with the concrete wall, while being normally supported on the other. This solution, combined with the use of 332 steel columns of varying types, meant the building could be constructed without the need for wind bracing in the roof.

All steel elements were painted with white water-based paint, according to the customer’s specifications, at our factory in Brande. Paintwork is one of the key areas of processing, environmental impact, and technical performance where Give Steel can contribute to achieving DGNB certification. We provide Frode Laursen with full documentation of this. Of course, such documentation is provided for all customers who choose us as supplier and installation contractor for their steel structures.

Two stages in one

Give Steel began work on the first stage of the steel structure in 2024. Shortly after starting, the transport and logistics company we are working with opted for a fast launch of the project’s second stage. This second phase began before we had even completed the first part of the build. Special solutions were required for the connections where the two buildings meet, due to their close proximity to the concrete walls where the new columns were to be positioned.

Part of the Frode Laursen construction is mounted on top of a concrete element structure. Ensuring a practical and buildable solution required increased coordination with other stakeholders on site. One challenge we encountered was the metal panels cast into the concrete structure, which Give Steel’s fitters used to install the columns. The build also required us to consider window frames carefully, to ensure the completed building would receive the desired amount of natural light.

In recent years, Frode Laursen has constructed logistics centres according to their own Green Warehouse Vision—an ambitious concept certified to the recognised DGNB Gold standard. The company integrates innovative solutions to reduce the climate and environmental impact of both construction and subsequent operation. Give Steel installed the steel structure as contractor for Dansk Halentreprise, who are building the logistics centre in Vejle as a turnkey contract for Frode Laursen.
